City of Gahanna To Host Groundbreaking Ceremony to Kick Off the Tech Center Drive Extension and Bridge Project

Residents and business will benefit from greater access as well as potential development.

When:             Friday, April 1st, 2011 2:30 pm

Where:           Entrance of the Tech center Drive Extension, intersection of S. Hamilton Road  and Pizzuro Park Dr.

Who:               Local and regional government and business leaders will make comments about the immediate and potential economic impact of the project followed by a ceremonial ground breaking.

This project will connect the Hamilton Road and I-270 interchange with Gahanna’s industrial and commerce area. With benefits as follows:
·         Relieve congestion of the 270,000 daily car count at the Morrison and Hamilton Intersection by diverting traffic. This will be a positive impact to 295 Businesses and 5,053 Employees
·         Provide better and shorter access to the current commerce area from I-270 and the airport
·         Provide access to Prime location for commercial and office development.
o   120 Acres in Central Park of Gahanna and 78 Acres of vacant land within I-270 Loop
·         Provide a link in the bicycle trail system.
·         Improved Drive Sequence
·         Direct Visibility to I-270
·         270,000 daily car count

“This project will provide access to hundreds of acres prime land for new development and has been in the planning phases for years,” said Anthony Jones, Gahanna’s Deputy Director of Planning & Development.  “Only through the cooperation of local, state and federal agencies have the funding of this project become possible.”

History of the project
  • May of 1998
    • The City investigated alternatives for better connectivity to the industrial area.
  • April of 2000
    • The City held a public involvement meeting regarding congestion at Morrison and Hamilton intersection.
  • June of 2000
    • Engineering began for Tech Center Drive
  • October 2000
    • The City applied for a Grant for construction of Tech Center Drive which was not granted.
  • September of 2001
    • ODOT the City conducted an interchange modification study which identified that the I-270 ramps would need to be upgraded for Tech Center Drive.
  • April of 2004
    • The City had an unsuccessful attempt at obtaining TRAC funding
  • 2006 and 2007
    • Morrison road was improved to accept the future Tech Center Drive on the east side. This was funded entirely with local funds
  • 2007
    • Gahanna was awarded Federal funds for the I-270 ramp modifications.
  • 2010
    • The I-270 ramp modifications were constructed.
Project Costs
  • The total project construction cost is $6,997,560.00. 
  • The MORPC attributable federal funds are $5,194,588
  • Gahanna’s contribution for this work was $1,802,972.00. 
  • The design and environmental work was a total of $1,002,678.22.
