Ask City Hall: Metering Traffic Lights on the Hamilton to the I-270 Ramps

Pam S. of Gahanna asked, “I have noticed the new metering traffic lights on the Hamilton to I-270 ramps. But I cannot figure out why they have a light on the back side? Which would face wrong-way traffic - coming "up" the down ramp. What gives?

We asked the Department of Service Deputy Director, Michael Andrako for the answer.

It is for enforcement. The Police would be sitting just past the meter on the ramp. They monitor it from the back and when they see a violation they can begin pursuit without having a line of cars in front of them,” Andrako said.

Also, if you are wondering why they are usually not functioning, they are activated only when I-270 reaches a certain level of congestion. This is monitored by detection units near the meters.”

Thanks for your great question Pam.

Doesn't this still create a bigger issue w/safety of wrong way drivers having the right of way due to green light? All over Columbus and central Ohio over the past five years there has been a surge of wrong way ramp drivers. And the city of Gahanna is more worried about someone not timing entry to freeway properly. Which is the bigger concern or safety issue here?

Jay,

Thanks for your comment.

Safety of motorists is always a top priority. The metering lights are at the end of the single direction ramp and would not be confused with traffic signals. This ramp exits onto a three lane stretch of I-270 that is divided from the other direction by medians and guardrails. The light is only visible when a police office or motorist is right next to the metering light. In addition, the metering was part of the Ohio Department of Transportation required upgrades to those exits.

But as always, if you ever see a motorist going the wrong way down any road or highway, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
